TPC Benchmark Status
June 2007

Overview

The TPC held a General Council meeting on April 19th in Austin, TX. The TPC-E Maintenance Subcommittee was formed in March and a new revision of the TPC-E benchmark was approved to incorporate clarifications and minor bug fixes. With respect to decision support, the current revision of the DS benchmark is in formal review until May 23rd.

Current Benchmarks

TPC-C

The TPC-C Maintenance Subcommittee had no outstanding issues to discuss at the April 2007 meeting. The subcommittee is continuing it's effort to reconcile historical TAB interpretations with the current wording in the TPC-C specification.  Any modifications required will appear in future versions of the TPC-C specification.

TPC-H, TPC-App

The Maintenance Subcommittees for TPC-H and TPC-App did not convene at this meeting. The subcommittees will continue to monitor the benchmarks, along with any TAB interpretations and rulings, for discussion and possible inclusion in future versions of the specifications.

New Benchmarks

TPC-E

The TPC-E Development Subcommittee was dissolved when the mail ballot approving TPC-E as a new benchmark passed. On March 15 the TPC-E Maintenance Subcommittee was formed.

The TPC-E Maintenance Subcommittee made editorial and clarification changes to the specification, and developed bug fixes for EGen. A new revision of the TPC-E benchmark (v1.1.0) with these changes was approved and is available immediately.

TPC-DS

The TPC accepted Draft Version 52 of the TPC-DS specification for Formal Review.  Members and the general public were invited to download the specification, run the draft benchmark, and submit comments and proposed changes by visiting the comment page. The comment database was open for submissions until May 23rd, 2007. The subcommittee will review and address the comments and propose a revised draft for adoption.

At the meeting the TPC-DS subcommittee focused on reviewing the comments and proposals. Nine companies have working prototypes with scale factors ranging from 1 GB to 1 TB on four hardware platforms, five operating systems and four databases.

Other TPC Activities

Pricing Specification

The Pricing Maintenance Subcommittee has created verification flows that are compatible with the Price Specification, to replace a flow chart that was developed by the TAB many years ago. The purpose of these flows is to guide benchmark sponsors on how to deal with pricing for not available or not orderable items and they will be included in a future revision of the Price Specification. The committee continues to work on improved language for valid product substitutions when benchmark specifications allow them. This work is also targeted for a future specification revision.

Public Relations Committee

The TPC will be presenting at a number of industry conferences over the next 12 months. The TPC welcomes opportunities to present the benefits and status of TPC benchmarks. If you are interested in inviting someone from the TPC for a presentation, please contact Michael Majdalany (majdalany @ tpc.org)
