TPC Benchmark Status
June 2009

Overview

Published about 5 times per year, the TPC Benchmark Status Report is a digest of the activities of the TPC and its technical subcommittees.

The TPC held a General Council meeting on April 17th in Austin, Texas. On the OLTP front, the TPC-E Maintenance Subcommittee accepted changes that will be incorporated into a future version of the benchmark standard. With respect to decision support, the discussions on future enhancements to the TPC-H and TPC-DS benchmarks continued. The Energy Subcommittee continued to make progress on energy metrics that will be incorporated into the existing TPC benchmarks. Finally, preparations for the TPC TC 2009 Technology conference are in their final stages with the announcement that Springer Verlag will publish the proceedings.

Current Benchmarks

TPC-C

The TPC-C Maintenance Subcommittee had no outstanding issues to discuss at the April 2009 meeting. The subcommittee will continue to monitor the benchmark, along with any TAB interpretations and rulings, for discussion and possible inclusion in future versions of the TPC-C specification.

TPC-H

The TPC-H Maintenance Subcommittee had no outstanding issues to discuss at the April 2009 meeting. The subcommittee is reviewing the TPC-H specification for inconsistencies and grammatical errors, and is looking at opportunities for improvements to the benchmark.

TPC-E

The TPC-E Maintenance Subcommittee accepted two sets of changes to the TPC-E Specification related to Durability requirements and a collection of minor wording improvements in the spec. These issues will be addressed in a future revision of the benchmark standard.

The TPC-E Maintenance Subcommittee accepted a set of changes to the TPC-E Executive Summary XML Schema Document, and these changes were made immediately.

No updates to the benchmark standard are being made at this time.

TPC-App

The TPC-App Maintenance Subcommittee did not convene at this meeting. The subcommittee will continue to monitor the benchmarks, along with any interpretations and rulings, for discussion and possible inclusion in future versions of the specification.

Benchmarks Under Development

ETL

The ETL benchmark committee is focused on specifying the schemas and transformations that will comprise the workload.  High-level thinking is going on about how to measure ETL performance and scale the workload, and what reliability requirements should be included.

Companies interested in participating in the development of this benchmark are invited to join and encouraged to contact the committee chair.

TPC-DS

The TPC-DS subcommittee is reviewing proposed changes in the specification that address trickle updates and query parameter variability.

Other TPC Activities

TPC Technology Conference 2009

The TPC announced that Springer Verlag will publish the proceedings from the TPC TC 2009 Technology Conference in their Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). The TPC has issued a call for papers for presentation at the conference, for publication in workshop materials and for consideration in future benchmark developments. The deadline for submission of the abstracts was June 5, 2009.

TPC Energy

The TPC Energy Subcommittee has developed methodology to add energy metrics to all the existing TPC Benchmarks. This will utilize the existing TPC benchmarks as the workload and during the running of the benchmarks, measure the energy being consumed by the System Under Test. The new metrics will be of the form: Watts/Performance.

The TPC-Energy Specification wording is approximately 99% complete. There remains some additional work in formatting. The TPC-Energy Subcommittee is developing code which will interface to the power analyzers and temperature probes. This code will collect the energy and temperature data of the components of the System Under Test and create a uniform log for reporting the results. The TPC will use the SPEC consortium Power and Temperature Daemon code as part of this benchmark. These programs will be available to Test Sponsors who will run the TPC-Energy option of the TPC Benchmarks.

Pricing Specification

The Price Maintenance Committee has developed wording to clarify what is required of sales channels and what is meant by similar prices for similar configurations. These clarifications will be included in a future revision of the specification. The current version of the Pricing specification is Version 1.4.0 and is unchanged since November 2008. No major changes are currently anticipated.

Public Relations Committee

The TPC has held briefings with several analyst firms, mostly focusing on the upcoming TC2009 Technology Conference, and the benchmarks under development.

The TPC continues to grow with two companies have joined the TPC: Syncsort and Xsprada.

We welcome opportunities to present the benefits and status of TPC benchmarks: if you are interested in inviting someone from the TPC for a presentation, please contact Michael Majdalany (majdalany @ tpc.org)
